Introduction

Beyond the planet we call earth lies a vast universe called the solar system. Our solar system consists of eight planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - as well as asteroids and other celestial bodies that all orbit the sun. Our solar system is in the shape of a disk and only makes up part of a galaxy, or group of stars, called the Milky Way. The solar system has fascinated people of all ages since the beginning of time.

New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) for Science states that all students will gain an understanding of space science and astronomy . Information Literacy Standards (ILS) are a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. Together, these standards and skills will ensure that today's students are equipped with the knowledge and technical abilities to succeed in their future endeavors.

This pathfinder is designed to aid students, teachers and parents in obtaining high quality informational resources necessary for researching the solar system. This is geared for grades 3 - 8. This pathfinder does not contain all the information that is available on solar systems. It is merely a guide to help you on your way. Be creative with your search. Remember that when it comes to the solar system, the sky is the limit!
