Health folder (for handouts); the folder may be part of your notebook or binder section
Writing implement - blue or black ink
Holt textbook:  Decisions for Health - Level Blue. These will be kept in class.

CLASS PROCEDURE

Place your notebook/health folder, Current Health 2 magazine, writing implement, and any other materials, such as hand-outs, needed for class that day on your desk. All other books, notebooks, etc, should be placed in or under the desk. Begin the "do now" task written on the front blackboard.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS/GRADING
Class participation, *preparation, **homework - 20%
Quizzes - 20%; quizzes will always be announced
Tests - 30%; tests will always be announced and a review given beforehand
Class projects or reports - 30 %; whenever possible, projects will be done in class
** Grade 8 Health Education is mostly hands-on—we will be doing mostly project work.
*Notebooks will be periodically spot-checked. Make sure you always have your notebook with you and that you have all notes and handouts from class. Class notes and handouts are important and will help you prepare for quizzes and tests. Being prepared for class is also part of your class participation grade.
** Homework/Current Event Assignment: One (1) health-related current event article with accompanying worksheet will be due each month. You may bring in the actual article or photocopy it. The article may be from the newspaper or a magazine.  This requirement is for the purpose of both encouraging you to read the newspaper and educational magazines regularly and so that you stay informed on current health information. Make sure that you read the article you have chosen. After reading the article you will then answer the questions about the article on the Current Event Health worksheet. Worksheets will be available in class or you may download it from the DMS Health web site. If you don't understand the information discussed in the article, you should choose a different article. The article must be stapled to the back of the worksheet.  The day the current event assignment is due you may be called on to share your information. Make sure that you are prepared! This is a painless homework assignment! Please note that Internet articles will be accepted only if they are from an online newspaper or magazine such as NY Times, Newweek, etc.
The following are recommended sources from which you may gather articles:
New York Times - Science Times section - every Tuesday
Bergen Record
Popular Science - monthly publication
Discover - monthly publication
Scientific American - monthly publication
Time, Newsweek - weekly publications - you may find health related articles in these also
Science News - weekly publication

Current Event Articles are due:
Heath current event assignments will be due on the Friday that your section is scheduled for Health. The due date will be announced in class, posted on my web site, and will be included on Week at a Glance  If there is no school that particular Friday then the assignment is due the next time the class meets. If the class does not meet due to an assembly, etc, the assignment is still due and must be in my mailbox by 3:05 that day to be considered on time.  Health Current Event assignments that are handed in up to one week in advance of the due date will receive extra points.

PROJECTS OR REPORTS:
One or more major projects or reports will be assigned each marking period.
Projects/reports will relate to a major topic being studied in class.
Whenever possible, class time will be given to work on a project. This will include research time in the library or computer lab—when available. If the library or lab is not available, you will be required to conduct the research on your own time.
Any report that is assigned will be done on your own time outside of class.
Projects may be either group or individual, depending on the topic. However, you will always have the option of working by yourself.
When a project or report is assigned you will be given specific guidelines regarding requirements and grading for the assignment. Sometimes you will be assigned a topic, other times you will be given the option to choose your topic.
General project/report requirements:
Handed in on time
On target with regard to content requirements
Accurate and thorough
On target with regard to format
Neat and well organized
Must include proper works cited

FYI:
You may hand in any major assignment early. Projects or reports handed in up to a week before the due date will receive extra credit if they meet all required criteria.
Major assignments not handed in on time will be lowered one full grade for every class period that it is late. (Remember that we meet every other day.)
It is recommended that you keep all graded and returned assignments in your notebook until the end of the marking period. If there is a question concerning your marking period grade, you will have the assignments to refer to.
If you need extra help, or have a question regarding anything covered in class, please see me.
Corrections on all quizzes and tests will be required and due the first class period following the return of the test or quiz. This is a good learning tool.
Any quiz or test grade below 70 must be signed by a parent/guardian and is due the next class period.
If you miss class due to band, ELP, etc. it is your responsibility to find out what you missed, get the notes, hand in whatever is due that class period, or make up the quiz or test (if one was scheduled).
If you miss class due to illness, it is your responsibility to make up whatever work was missed, get the notes, hand in whatever assignment was due and/or make arrangements to make up a quiz or test if one was given on that day.
