Attendance
Regular attendance, participation in class activities, and interaction between pupils and teachers are vital and integral parts of the learning process. Being absent or late affects not just the student, but his/her teacher and other students as well. It is important that a child be present each day that school is in session unless illness prevents attendance. A child should be kept at home for observation for any of the following symptoms: abnormal temperature (100 degrees or above), frequent cough, rashes, pink eyes, sorethroat or earache, swollen glands, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Students should not return to school unless unless fever, vomit, and/or diarrhea-free for 24 hours.
For infections requiring antibiotic treatment the student should return to school no sooner than 24 hours after the start of the medication.
Absence verification
The intent of the required absence verification program is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. Parents/guardians must report student absences by phoning the 24 hour Absence Verification line at 201-768-6363 ext 235. On the second day of absence homework may be requested at this number when reporting the absence. The
homework may be picked up outside the nurse's office after 3 p.m.
Medication Administration in School
All medication, including over the counter medications such as analgesics and decongestants as well as prescription medications require a written request from the physician and the parent/guardian. Forms are available from the school nurse. For students with asthma and/or severe allergies it is very important to have the medication, such as metered dose inhalers and Epi-pens and a written action plan on hand in school.
All medication, prescription and over the counter, is to be supplied in the original, labeled bottle. Medication is not to be carried by the student except for inhalers and Epi-pens which may be carried and self-administered by the student with proper authorization.
