Get Ready For An
“ART SMART”
Year!!!
Welcome back to another school year full of excitement and new challenges! This year, our art classes will concentrate on the “Art Smart Chart”. Each class will be able to earn points for their class during art by using materials properly, being respectful to each other, executing good clean-up skills, and answering key follow-up questions about the day’s art lesson.
During the school year, each grade will concentrate on a theme in art class. This allows students to explore more ways in which Art touches the lives of everyone. The following is a preview of our art themes for the 2008-2009 school year.
The Kindergarten and First Graders will be introduced to art in a new way this year by concentrating on the “Elements of Art”. The “Elements of Art” will include: Color, Value, Line, Texture, Shape, Form and Space. Each project will focus on one element, preparing our students to conquer new art challenges by learning about tools, exploring different media and taking an active part of the entire art process.
The Second Grade will build upon their knowledge of the “Elements of Art” by looking at art and artists throughout history. Students will learn about the lives and work of artists like Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Paul Gauguin, Georgia O’Keeffe and Diego Rivera. Students will share a connection to art with these artists by creating projects and using processes that are influenced by each artist.
The Third Graders and Sixth Graders will begin their voyage in search of “Art Around the World”. We will visit various countries around the world to study art and build an understanding of different cultures. Primary countries of study will include Australia, India, China, Poland, Mexico, Guatemala, Egypt and The United States.
Fourth Grade and Seventh Grade will take an interdisciplinary approach in the art classroom this year by studying artists who have made connections and contributions through Modern Art to other areas of study. These artists will include M.C. Escher (Math Equations), Paul Cézanne (Geometry), Piet Mondrian (Balance in Math and Science), Rene Magritte and Salvatore Dali (Psychology), Leonardo DaVinci (Engineering) and Alexander Calder (Physics).
The Fifth Graders and Eighth Graders will “Travel Through Time” this year. By returning to the first known “Human” art found in the caves of France, to the modern art of the “Fauvists” during the 20thCentury, each student will study history, geography and the influence of culture in artwork. Stops along the journey will take us to the Prehistoric Age, Early Egyptian Kingdoms, The Early and Gothic Middle Ages, The Renaissance, Neo-Classicism and Post Impressionism.
Overall,I am looking forward to a very exciting year in the art room! I would like to wish you and your family a happy, healthy and successful school year!
