Grade 3
Australian Aboriginal Bark Painting
Third graders really enjoyed "visiting" the Aborigines in Australia.
After learning about the tradition of "Aboriginal Dreaming", and
while listening to some authentic Aboriginal music, our third graders tried their hand at making their own Aboriginal Bark Painting. Each painting contained an animal that is native to
Australia, as well as authentic Aboriginal designs!
African Symmetrical Masks
Masks are made in many cultures around the world for various
purposes. The third graders created their own symmetrical
masks by looking at examples of African Tribal Masks. Not only
did we draw and color with symmetrical designs and colors, but
we also mounted our mask on paper in a way that they became 3-Dimensional!
Walk Like An Egyptian!
Ever wonder what it would be like to design your own sarcophagus? That's exactly what the third graders have been working on lately in art class. We learned about the Egyptian belief in "After Life", and used our new knowledge to create our very detailed, Life-Size Sarcophagus.
Pueblo Indian Pottery
Using a technique to create pinch pots with red-earth clay, we were able to recreate little bowls, similar to the pottery of the Pueblo Indians. We were especially inspired by the intricate Pueblo designs of the "Rain Bird"!
Navajo Weaving
3rd graders enjoyed using cardboard looms to
weave small blankets on. In the tradition of the
Navajo Indians, some students even added
color patterns to their textile weaving.
