Wendy Lewis is a Kinetic Sculptor and art educator living in New Jersey, USA. She makes fountains and kinetic sculpture that depart from the conventional using motors, pumps, found objects, and mixed media. She uses a broad range of techniques such as blacksmithing, soldering, welding, and casting as well as work with wood, clay, and concrete. These materials are subverted into political and social commentary, personal issues and narrative. The main thrust of her work is art for public places. She often invites community participation in some form. This might include working with local residents of a particular town or engaging the help of young people in the final creation. Some of her work is interactive. She has always enjoyed working on drawing and mixed media projects. Her watercolors are a result of the various sketchbooks that she keeps during her travels. She has been teaching art for several years at the University and High School level and has been the recipient of various grants for her sculpture. Involvement with Cuba as an American Artist:In July 2001 she was invited to participate in The Festival del Caribe in Santiago de Cuba which is sponsored by the Consejo Provincial De Las Artes Plasticas. She exhibited drawings related to her fountains at Galeria Oriente and gave a slide and video lecture at the Biblioteca Provincial about her work and the life of an artist in the US. After viewing her video, members of the Consejo Provincial De Las Artes Plasticas invited her to return the following year to create a sculpture. Her host Oscar Mesa Menzies who works with UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba) introduced her to Caridad Ramos. She and Caridad decided to collaborate together after realizing the positive impact their individual talents would have united together. Their interest in public art, Caridad's excellence in casting and Lewis' extensive knowledge in the field of fountains would combine to form a worthwhile project. Lewis returned in December 2001 to meet with Ramos and finalize plans for their project. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs for the District of Antonio Maceo has approved 2 sites for them to rehabilitate. In August, 2002 Lewis returned to Cuba where she created a small fountain with Caridad for the first site. They have been asked to create a large-scale fountain project with members of the community for the second site. Their target work schedule is for the summer of 2004. |
