Solar Fountain Community Project

Community residents of all ages as well as skilled artists and laborers will participate in the creation of a solar fountain in the neighborhood of Distrito Urbano Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. This project will be a collaboration of two sculptors working together from the United States and Cuba; Wendy Lewis and Caridad Ramos. Lewis and Ramos will create the design of the fountain as well as serve as project directors. It will be an outgrowth of Projecto "Golindrina", a community arts venture that already exists in Santiago and is run by sculptor Caridad Ramos.

Fountain Project Description

The site of the project is located on the side wall of a 5-story residence building and the hill below it. It borders the main street of the community and is visible from one of the principal thoroughfares of Santiago.

The project includes creating sculptures, a large basin, benches, tables, and landscaping. Water will cascade from the top of the building, through a kinetic sculpture made up of found objects and metal sculptures. It will then fall through a relief sculpture that is in the form of a large hand made up of tiles of childrenŐs handprints and continue to flow into the basin.

Elements in the basin of the fountain will be made from bronze casts of prominent community members and assorted local personages. By this we mean several recognizable individuals who make up the daily visual presence and true flavor of the neighborhood. Our subjects will be taken from children playing in the streets, seniors sitting on doorsteps, local street musicians, lovers, merchants, dancers, domino players, and others.

Water will spout out or flow and spill over various parts of the cast forms, at times forming pools in the nooks and crannies of the figures.

Solar energy will be used to generate the water flow and lighting.
