Our Reading:
Weekly letters, sounds, formation, and sharing box coincides with letter of the week as we prepare the students to learn to read. Balanced Literacy Centers such as Write the Room and Magnetic Letters help us to learn word families. We each have a bookbag attached to our seats so we have a book to enjoy when our work is complete. We will begin our guided reading groups in January.Children are encouraged to take a simple story book home and practice reading it. They are then encouraged to be a guest reader. Homework involves a packet of pages which are used to reinforce learned concepts. They are due back on Friday.
Mathematics:
The areas of focus in this academic area include: computation, number recognition, number formation, graphing, patterning, money, time.
Handwriting:
We are in the process of using "Handwriting without Tears". Please refer to the packet of directions you received when you assist your child with formation of letters.
Language Arts:
We are learning to write various types of sentences and words encompassing science, math, social studies, and other subjects cross curriculum. We use our journals to record important happenings.
Each letter has a song that helps reinforce the letter sound. We are attempting to design a puppet for each letter sound.
Science:
We do a simple science prediction to coincide with the letter of the week. It is giving us practice in predicting, observing and recording data. We also use our time with Enrichment to embellish our Science curriculum. We are studying animals and how they are important to us. We are learning all about birds. We will soon explore the world of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. We are increasing our vocabulary by learning names of different types of animals and the names of their babies. We are making a curriculum link between Art and Science by making puppets and illustrating books. Weather and our changing environment are an important focus.
Each day a student will have the opportunity to be the Weather Person of the Day. The student will be give a short morning presentation to the class. It is giving us a great chance to use our map skills as well as being aware of our changing weather.
Social Studies:
We continue to work on lessons in our Social Studies continuum. We are studying Teddy Roosevelt and the Teddy Bear, Skyscrapers, George Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr. This year we will also learn about the American Cowboy. We are going to meet our community helpers through our parent volunteer presentations. We look forward to learning all about the jobs people do in our community! Additional work takes place during our Enrichment time with Ms. Tarrant. This will commence during the second part of the year.
Italian:
We are learning the language of Italian in our room. Please encourage your child to share their italian vocabulary . We are also exploring the Italian culture.
Sharing Time -
We try to share at circle time
as often as possible. It is great
for children when they are developing their
public speaking skills.
I find sharing in a group setting increases
vocabulary and confidence.
