CLASS INFORMATION



LANGUAGE ARTS


Process Writing
Students will engage in a writer's workshop regularly. This is the time for them to work through the steps of prewriting, drafting, editing, revising and preparing/ sharing final published pieces.
        
Students will individually conference with me on their writing pieces during this time, receiving personal guidance and feedback.
                        
Students will explore writing in the following discourse modes:
        * Expository            
        * Narrative       
        * Persuasive          
        * Descriptive   
        * Poetry

Emphasis will be placed on specific skills such as:
        * Fact and opinion                      
        * Cause and effect
        * Comparison and contrast               
        * Paragraph structure                   
        * Transitional words
        * Complete, correct sentences           
        * Figurative Language                   
        * Poetic Devices


Journals
Journals are utilized in a variety of ways in the LA classroom. Students may respond to a reading, presentation, or prompt. They may also choose to free write and develop ideas for topics they wish to explore further and eventually develop into published writing pieces.

Grammar & Usage
Explicit grammatical skills are taught and continually reinforced as they are integrated into authentic writing activities.
        * 8 Parts of Speech                     
        * Subjects/Predicates           
        * Subject/Verb Agreement        
        * Phrases/Clauses                       
        * Verbs & Pronouns                      
        * Avoiding Common Usage Errors  
        

Speaking/Listening/Viewing
Students will learn a variety of communication skills such as:

        * Preparing, rehearsing, and delivering a formal presentation in logical/sequential order including an opening, supporting details, and a closing statement
        
        * Listening to determine a speaker's purpose, attitude, and perspective

        * Asking pertinent questions, taking notes, and drawing conclusions based on information presented
        
        * Identifying the central theme in a movie, film, or illustration

        * Recognizing the rich and varied language of literature





LITERATURE


Focus of the Program
Students will read, interpret, and discuss texts of varying lengths and genres while developing the following components:
        * Literal Comprehension         
        * Inferential Comprehension             
        * Character Development                 
        * Literary Devices                      
        * Critical Thinking Skills              
        * Language of Literature


Types of Literature
        * Short Stories                         
        * Assigned Novels                                       
        * Independent Choices


Vocabulary Development
Students will study vocabulary acquired from readings as well as advanced vocabulary to be used in their writing and presenting.

Additional focus on:
                * Antonyms
                * Prefixes /Suffixes
                * Synonyms /Antonyms                                                   

Integrated Writing
Students will engage in a variety of writing tasks related to class readings.
