Class Information
Course Description: Grades 6 and 7 Language and Literature Classes provide students with opportunities to enhance their critical thinking skills, their reading comprehension, and their reading fluency, as well as their writing skills through the reading and analysis of literature. That literature will be presented in the forms of novels, short stories, and poems. In addition, we will be utilizing a textbook. Technology will be integrated into the curriculum through webquests, research projects, and the use of Study Island and other appropriate software as supplied by the district. This combined approach will strengthen the instruction of reading and writing strategies. Students will learn to
master the writing process from brainstorming to publishing by examining various forms of writing (persuasive, speculative, expository, and narrative).
Test preparation for the NJASK6 & NJASK7 is woven throughout all elements of instruction.
The use of multiple reading strategies, graphic organizers, literature circles, oral presentations, projects, and cooperative learning groups will assist students as they endeavor to reach their potential. A multiple intelligences, differentiated approach is used in an effort to address all learning needs and learning styles.
The 6th and 7th grade language and literature classes will work in conjunction with the Social Studies and other classes whenever feasible.
Course Overview
Students will read high-interest coming of age novels, historical fiction, short stories, poems, and non-fiction.
Library and research skills are emphasized in conjunction with the Media Specialist during our Quarter 2 Poetry Research Project for 6th grade and Quarter 3 Author Study Project for 7th grade.
Grading: All grades are based on a point system. Points earned for each assignment will be divided by the total possible points to determine a grade. Assessments will consist of: quizzes, tests, projects, and oral presentations.
Class Philosophy and Policy
Being successful in the 6th and 7th grades is vital to success in high school. Therefore, preparation for high school is a high priority. Students will be guided and expected to write extensively. As the year progresses, students are expected to assume increasing degrees of independence and responsibility.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
** Show a desire to succeed. Work consistently and efficiently. Students with a strong work ethic will experience a sense of satisfaction, accomplishment, and pride.
** Show respect for classmates, teachers, property, and yourself, of course. All you really need to do is treat other people the way you want to be treated. Disrupting class is disrespectful and indicates a lack of full participation. Therefore, any student disrupting class will lose participation points. Naturally, the overall grade for the quarter will be negatively affected.
** Complete all assignments on time.
VERY IMPORTANT:
Missing and late homework will negatively affect your grade.
All work missed due to absence from class MUST be made up in a TIMELY manner.
REMEMBER:
** Be prepared for class each and every day. Have ALL required materials.
** Be organized. This can only help you achieve your goals.
** Follow all classroom rules.
CLASS PARTICIPATION COUNTS TOWARDS YOUR REPORT CARD GRADE. IT INCLUDES MEANINGFUL ACTIVE PARTICIPATION, ACTIVE LISTENING, FOCUS, ATTENTIVENESS, AND RESPECT FOR YOUR CLASSMATES AND TEACHER! IT DOES AFFECT YOUR GRADE!
MOST IMPORTANTLY, RELAX AND ENJOY OUR CLASS!
